Avtron classifies industrial encoders into five basic types:

1. Commercial
2. Light Mill Duty
3. Mill Duty
4. Heavy Mill Duty
5. Severe Duty

Each step up in the classification increases the durability of the encoder, its ability to withstand contaminants and abuse, and the ability to withstand bearing load (or elimination of bearings altogether).
