Magnetic Encoder Problems Back to FAQs
Magnetic encoders have historically had five problems, all of which are solved by Avtron products.
  1. The sensor/rotor gap was extremely small, often less than 0.010", requiring precise adjustments and mounting. Old magnetic encoders were subject to “sensor crashes”. Avtron’s Wide-Gap technology in the THIN-LINE II™ products (AV56, AV67, AV85, AV115) and SMARTach II™ (AV125, AV850) eliminates this problem.

  2. External magnetic signals, such as motor windings, and brake coils, cause some competitive encoders to give false counts. Avtron’s encoder technology enables our magnetoresistive sensors to ignore signals that do not come from the encoder magnetic rotor. See white paper #1 below.

  3. Some competitive magnetic encoders are limited to low resolution; Avtron’s encoders are high resolution. The HS35M is available up to 2500 PPR; many models: AV56, AV67, AV85, AV115, AV485, AV685, AV850 are available up to 5000 PPR, and the AV125 reaches 8192 PPR!

  4. Modular magnetic encoders had frequent problems with “slipping rotors”, where the magnetic rotor would come loose from the motor shaft. Avtron magnetic rotors are designed with the highest holding force in the industry, and are available in special cam screw rotor™ versions in some models (AV850, AV56, AV67, AV85, AV115) to eliminate slipped rotors altogether.

  5. Magnetic encoders were too expensive for ordinary applications. Avtron has created extremely cost-effective designs that bring magnetic durability within reach. (KXL, PXL, HS35M) See white paper #2 below.
