Explosion Protection

Avtron offers a range of heavy mill duty encoders for use in hazardous locations. Avtron encoders are ATEX certified for explosion protection for use in explosive atmospheres. Model: M6-(4-7).

Other protection methods:: Some motor manufacturers and brake manufacturers fully enclose Avtron encoders within their explosion-proof housing. This enables the entire device, including the encoder to receive explosion proof/explosion protected/flameproof certification.

Intrinsically Safe vs. Explosion Protected

Intrinsically Safe encoders do not contain an explosion or flame; they require an external current-limiting device to be placed in the encoder circuit outside the hazardous area. This device is designed to prevent sparking current levels. Avtron does not offer intrinsically safe encoders; we offer Explosion Protected units instead.

Explosion Protected encoders are certified to directly contain any explosion or flame within their rating. This permits explosion protected encoders to be directly mounted in hazardous areas within their rating with no external devices required.

UL Class/Division vs. CSA vs. ATEX

	UL Class/Division or Class/Zone ratings generally are applied to equipment installed or manufactured within the USA. Hazardous locations in the USA may require UL Certification.
	CSA Class/Division ratings generally are applied to equipment installed or manufactured within Canada. Hazardous locations in Canada may require CSA certification.
	ATEX Class/Zone ratings generally are applied to equipment installed or manufactured outside of Canada and the USA. Hazardous locations outside the USA and Canada, including offshore marine applications, may require ATEX certification.

Certifications are not interchangeable - even though the functionality and protection level may appear equivalent. However, site or overall machine certification may be performed by a qualified inspector. Inspectors may approve encoders and other equipment that meets the requirements, but does not have the exact certification.
